Surry County

Mount Airy and Surry (SUHree) County is like a return to the past, capitalizing on its television fame as the television town of Mayberry in the the Andy Griffith Show of the 60s.

Pilot MountainThe mountainous terrain makes for beautiful sight-seeing and active recreation. Pilot Mountain Sate Park offers camping, climbing, and other activities. The mountain is a unique land formation that rises 1,400 feet. The 165-mile Yadkin River Canoe Trail passes through the park, making it popular with canoeists and kayakers who camp on the river's two islands.

Quick Facts: ( 537 sq mi/1,391 sq km; NW N.C.; Dobson; 3625'N 8041'W. In Piedmont region; bounded N by Va. state line, S by Yadkin R. Agr. area (tobacco, corn, dairying, wheat, soybeans, hay, chickens, cattle), timber, stone and granite quarrying; mfg. at Elkin and Mt. Airy. Pilot Mt. State Park in E; Horne Creek Living Historical Farm in SE corner. Blue Ridge (Natl.) Parkway closely follows W boundary (Alleghany co.). Formed 1770.
