A brief history of Winston-Salem

The ideal climate for business, Winston-Salem is in the midst of an exciting downtown revitalization
The two cities of Salem and Winston were merged by the postal service in 1899 by combining the Winston post office and the Salem post office with a hyphen placed between their names. The hyphen became permanent in 1913.

Salem, one of the earliest planned communities in the American colonies, was founded in 1766 by the Moravians as a trade and crafts center. They were industrious artisans who made their wares (pottery, cloth, guns) with great pride. They helped lay the foundation for the furniture manufacturing industry in this region. Music was part of their religious services and their everyday lives. Their love of the arts created a legacy of appreciation for art, crafts and music evident in the City today. America's oldest continually performing brass band, the Salem Band, began performing here in 1778 and continues today with performances in Old Salem's square during the summer.

Winston, just north of Salem, was founded by settlers of Quaker and European descent in 1849 to serve as the county seat and was named in honor of Colonel Joseph Winston, a war hero and legislator. The city was known as a major producer of furniture, tobacco products and textiles. Winston was named the seat of Forsyth County in 1851. The Courthouse Square was laid one mile north of Salem Square with plans for the streets of the two towns to run together. R.J. Reynolds and his family played a major role in establishing the City of Winston-Salem.In 1875, Richard Joshua Reynolds moved to the area to start what would eventually become the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

In ways big and small, the City was shaped during the 20th century by Reynolds Tobacco and the Hanes companies. As the economic contribution of tobacco has declined, the city's economy is shifting from manufacturing to finance, education, medicine and technology. The ideal climate for business, the city is in the midst of an exciting downtown revitalization that is bringing people back to the center city. Several construction projects are underway, including the Piedmont Triad Research Park, conversion of old factories into lofts and condos, and a new inner-city ball park.
