A trappers cabin built in the 1740s marked the beginning of this towns history, but it would be another 130 years before the name of Rural Hall was coined. In the second half for the 1800s, mail arriving in the area now known as Rural Hall was sent to the home of postmaster Benjamin Bitting, who used part of his house as a post office. Mail sent to the Bittings large house was addressed to "The Hall," and was often confused with mail meant for the post office in Salem. To clear up confusion, Salems' postmaster began marking mail meant for Bittings home as "The Rural Hall," and the name stuck.

The town was incorporated in 1974 and has grown from a population of just over 1,000 in 1974 to over 3,000 today.
