Walkertown was named after an early settler, Dr. Robert L. Walker.

In the early days, the Norfolk-Western Railway defined Walkertown and linked the town to the outside world by providing transportation and bringing in the mail. At one time, the depot was a major stopping point for the Norfolk & Western Railroad Co. Today, the railroad tracks still run through Walkertown, but the town has grown and now reaches right to the edge of Winston-Salem.

Incorporated in 1985, the town has recently installed a sewer and water system providing the opportunity for more houses
and businesses. The town is home to a community park and several churches, including Gospel Light Baptist Church, one of the largest churches in the state. The community part has a popular walking trail and several sports fields.
