Located off US Highway 52 (future Interstate 74) north of Winston-Salem, King has been able, even with the rapid growth they are experiencing, to maintain a small town atmosphere. Residents are noted for our strong sense of community and civic pride.
The town was initially referred to as King's Cabin, for Charles King's log cabin on old Highway 52, a popular stagecoach stop. In 1894, the railroad depot and other businesses started calling the area King.
Incorporated in 1983, King has grown rapidly (31.1% growth rate from 1990 to 2000). There are numerous restaurants and shopping centers, churches of several denominations, a wide variety of manufacturing facilities, a library, an American Legion Post and county fairground, a new YMCA, several business parks, a police department, a fire department, a large recreation center, two medical centers, just to name a few of the many establishments in this progressive and delightful community. |
