Ten miles southwest of Winston-Salem, the Village of Clemmons is a thriving community, founded in 1802 and incorporated in 1986.
Located within the village is the 1,100-acre Tanglewood Park. In addition for its well-known Festival of Lights during the holidays, Tanglewood features an arboretum and rose garden, horseback riding, tennis, and canoe and paddleboat rentals, and championship golf courses.
The most famous historical artifact in Clemmons is the fully restored nine-passenger "Hattie Butner Stagecoach," which is on display at Village Hall. It was once owned by Edwin Clemmons, the great-grandson of the village's founder, Peter Clemmons. After moving to Forsyth County from Delaware with his wife and 14 children, Peter Clemmons paid $542 for 216 acres and opened a store for area residents. He also is known for building the first bridge across the Yadkin River.
