Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Historic West End was one of Winston-Salem's most fashionable residential areas at the turn of the last century. It was the location of choice for the wealthy and included the homes of the Reynolds and Hanes families. The neighborhood was designed by the citys first engineer, Jacob Lott Ludlow.
Its stone walls and steps blend with its curvy streets and terraced lawns to showcase its large Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsmen, Bungalow, Victorian, and Classical Revival style homes. Rescued from deterioration by the West End Association in the 1960s, the neighborhood has been largely restored. Although originally traveled by street cars, motorized trolleys now frequent the streets, and local cafes, shops and park settings add charm and interest.
Home prices range from the high $100,000s to the $500,000s and beyond.
