Located in the center of the Triad between Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, Kernersville is home to many of those who work in the surrounding cities. The town offers all you could ask for: YMCA, Little Theatre, parks, movie theatre, bowling and sports. Positioned on I-40 and Business I-40, Kernersville is just seven miles from Piedmont Triad International Airport and the future Federal Express Mid-Atlantic Hub. Industries range from furniture and textile manufacturing to freight transport.
Kernersville was originally known as Dobson's Crossroads, named for William Dobson, who bought 1,133 acres in the area. In November 1817, Joseph Kerner came to town and bought 1,032 acres, including a store and inn. The town then became known as Kerner's Crossroad. When the land was incorporated in 1871, it became known as the Town of Kernersville.
Kernersville's most famous attraction is Korner's Folly, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dubbed "The Strangest House in the World," it was built in the late 1800s by Jule Korner, an eccentric, wealthy, interior designer, decorator and painter (and grandson of Joseph Kerner). This truly unique and intriquing house is composed of 22 rooms spread out on three floors and seven levels, with varying ceiling heights, narrow passages, handcrafted woodwording, odd murals, trap doors, fifteen fireplaces--and home to Cupid's Park, the first private theatre in America. The house is open to the public for walk-in tours year round.
Despite its growth and ambitions, Kernersville still places an emphasis on its past and on community spirit. The Kernersville Historical Preservation Society has prepared a walking tour of 27 historical buildings downtown.
